Its ancient Roman origin is so evident, that it is impossible to take a short walk in town without coming across remnants of the ancient city wall, or stones of the onetime Amber Road linking Byzantinum with Vindobona (today's Vienna), or parts of the municipal water system of the Romans. Today's Sopron, this beautiful baroque town, is packed with well preserved city mansions (Storno-HouseTábornok-House, Fabricius-House, Pharmacy-house, Cézár-House), museums of rich collections, and churches from the medieval and baroque times (Goat Church, Old Synagogue). It boasts a medieval Fire-watch tower - 61 metres high- which is also an emblem of the town and functions as a public look out place. It is brightened by outdoor cafés, excellent restaurants, pubs and wine cellars (Sopron is famous for its excellent redwine -Blue Frank in particular). Two of the greatest baroque composers are also tightly linked to the history of Sopron. Joseph Haydn spent long time in town, and Franz Liszt, the world famous Hungarian composer and pianist made his debute here as a child prodigy pianist.
